How many people are injured on the job in Minnesota?

As an employee in Minnesota, you should be able to trust that appropriate safety procedures and systems are in place to keep you safe while performing your job. However, there always exists the potential for accident to occur. Many of these incidents are legally required to be reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Just how many of these accidents happen each year in Minnesota?

According to the state Department of Labor and Industry, an average of 210 reportable injuries occurred on jobsites throughout the state in 2012. In that same year, there were 70 deaths attributed to workplace incidents, 10 more deaths than in the previous year. The 70 fatalities in 2012 also outnumbered the annual average of 66 for the years 2007 to 2011.

More than 77,000 employees were hurt while on the job in Minnesota in 2012. Of those, 27 percent or a little more than 21,000 were forced to lose time from work due to their injuries. Another 20 percent, or roughly 15,000 people, were able to work but required restricted or different job activities.

Across the United States in 2012, 3.4 out of every 100 workers classified as full time suffered injuries on the job. In Minnesota, that number was higher with 3.8 out of every 100 full-time employees being injured. Since 1993, Minnesota’s rate of injured workers has been greater than the national average.
