Fatal accident at Vikings stadium results in OSHA fines

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2016 | Construction Workers' Accidents |

Construction workers in Minnesota must work under some of the most extreme and dangerous conditions. Even enduring a range of weather and other environmental factors can make a day at work a challenge for people on construction job sites. In addition, working at heights and in locations that are physically precarious and open the door to falls or other accidents only exacerbate the risks faced on a daily basis.

The local construction worker community experienced a sad time last August when two men were involved in an accident at the Minnesota Vikings Stadium. One man suffered injuries while another man lost his life in the incident. The case led to a thorough investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA recently returned findings from its investigation and indicates that both the roofing company and the general contractor for the job had violated safety rules.

The roofer is being cited for more than one violation, including for having failed to provide appropriate protection against falling. The contracting company is being cited for what OSHA calls “serious” violations yet no details about what that really means were released. In all, the two companies are being ordered to pay nearly $175,000 in fines though both are contesting the payments.

In addition to actions taken by OSHA or other agencies, individuals may wish to seek compensation after such accidents occur. Talking to an attorney may be a good way for people to learn how they can best do this.
