What does it mean to achieve maximum medical improvement?

The jargon used during workers’ compensation claims can overwhelm people in need of benefits. There are so many unique terms that it may seem like a different language.

People who struggle to understand the rules for workers’ compensation because of the confusing jargon may have a difficult time getting and maintaining the benefits that they deserve. Professionals already diagnosed with a work-acquired medical condition may feel confident about their eligibility for benefits.

However, a doctor’s determination could affect a person’s ability to continue receiving medical treatment or disability benefits. If a physician declares that a worker has achieved maximum medical improvement (MMI), the benefits available to that worker will change. What does it mean to achieve MMI after a work injury?

The employee is unlikely to respond to additional care

Some workers make a full recovery and can return to work without any significant functional limitations. Not every worker is that fortunate. Some only improve partially after treatment.

A designation of MMI does not mean that they can immediately return to work. Instead, it means that the additional medical interventions are unlikely to produce a lasting improvement in their condition. Typically, workers who achieve MMI no longer qualify for medical treatment benefits.

However, given that they still have symptoms, they may be eligible for health benefits intended to manage those symptoms. They may also be eligible for permanent partial disability benefits. If they continue to present functional limitations related to their condition, they could receive benefits that augment their reduced earning potential or a lump-sum payment based on the functional impact of their injuries.
